James Madison Signed Land Grant to Soldier Named Corporal John Cobbs
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a wonderful piece of early American history. This is an original land-grant signed by President James Monroe in 1811. It is dated from Washington on March 11th 1811. This is one of the land grants that were given to soldiers that served honorably. This one was given to a man named Roger C. Hills. It states that he was given the land because of the service of John Cobbs. It states that "...John Cobbs, a corporal in the late army of the United States in Consideration of the said John Cobbs Military Service." He was given 100 acres in what they called the "Lot#6 in the 3rd Quarter of the Ninth Township in the 8th Range of the Tract."." In the lower right hand side of the document it has the very faintest remnants of the ink autograph of President James Monroe. It has all but faded out but was there. It is also signed by Madison's Secretary of State. On the left-hand side, it has the applied paper seal. The document has some soiling as you can see but is still legible. It is accompanied by a modern Xerox of President Monroe with a facsimile signature at the bottom. The document measures approximately 16 inches by 9-1/8ths in overall size and is held in an acid free holder. This is a great piece of early Presidential history.
