This is an excellent original non-excavated cross saber hatpin from the Indian War. The cross saber denoted the cavalry branch of service during the Civil War. These look just like the Civil War version except they are small in overall size. They were manufactured out of stamped brass. This one still has traces of the original gold gilding down in the protected areas. On the back of the piece it still retains all of the original four attachments loops. The overall size of the piece measures 2-3/4ths inches by1-1/4th inches in size. This is the classic style that would have adorned the enlisted man's forage hat of a Indian War cavalryman and would date from about 1872-1876.
