Here is a fantastic looking set! This is a wonderful commercially sold cased Whitworth Patent rifle. This gun is very similar to the ones that were sold to the Confederacy during the Civil War and used with such great accuracy. They fire the classic .45 caliber bullet with the Whitworth designed hexagonal rifling. The gun measures 49 inches in overall length with 33 of those inches being the barrel. The breech of the barrel is marked with the "52" marking that denotes the .45 caliber bore size as the English call it a "52 Bore". It also has the "B101" marking that lets us know it was the 101st barrel. Along the top of the barrel, it has the vividly clear "WHITWORTH PATENT" marking by the rear sight. the lockplate has the "WHITWORTH" marking in front of the hammer just above the original sliding safety. Behind the hammer, it has the crown stamp with sheaf over "W". The case has beautiful factory case colors. The mechanics of the lock still catches on both positions. It is crafted with the exceptionally beautiful 1-piece dark wood stock. The wrist has the ornate checking pattern to improve grip for the shooter. The wood is detailed with the iron hardware including the triggerguard, barrel bands, nose cap, buttplate and patch box. Each of these pieces still retain a beautiful amount of the original factory bluing and case colors. Under the gun, it has the full-length ramrod as well as both of the sling swivels. The lockplate has the It is believed that this pattern of Whitworth is one of the one that was sold just after the Civil War. The Whitworth Company changed to the Manchester Ordnance Company sometime in 1862. It became the Whitworth Company LTD in 1865, closing in 1870. It is an exceptional gun from all angles. The gun comes in the original golden oak factory casing. It has a very fine construction and the oak is still attractive with a couple of age cracks. The underside of the lid has the original paper label with the "WHITWORTH RIFLE COMPANY" marking over the image of a beautiful seal image and at the top, it has the "BY HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL LETTERS PATENT". Along the bottom of the label, it has the Sackville Street of Manchester address. Inside the case it has the five open compartments as well as the three covered compartments. All of the original compartment lids are intact. Inside the casing it ahs the original percussion cap tin, tin for wadding, oiler, sling, screwdriver tools. It also has an Jappaned tin that contains the small gun tools that include a couple of jags, bullet puller worm and a tompion. Inside the covered compartments, it has the original leather covered powder flask, main spring vise and bullet mold. This set has spent the last decade or so in the personal collection of County Music Legend and avid gun collector, Hank Williams, Jr. We were at a gun show in Louisville, Kentucky when Hank found this gun. It has been in a special display in his cannon room ever since that day. I have seen a few of these cased Whitworths over the years but this is by far the finest and most complete cased sets I have ever seen. Don't miss this fantastic set!
