This is a wonderful excavated Civil War era Confederate "Snake" style belt buckle. These were imported from England through the Union naval blockade and often worn by Confederate officers. They have the distinctive double headed snake in the center that joins the 2 large size belt loops. These Civil War excavated versions have the round belt loops that have the attachment rings soldered directly onto the snake side of the belt loops. This one has a fine color all over with a pleasing chocolate patina. It is very similar to this pattern is used a plate #199 in Steve Mullinax' Confederate Belt Buckle Book. This is a great looking excavated snake pattern belt buckle.
