This is a version of Confederate officers sword that you don't encounter that often. This is the style with the pommel cap that is illustrated on page 12 of the Photographic Supplement of Confederate Swords by William Albaugh, III. It has the brass handguard with the floral pattern in the center with the smooth sides on the quillion. On the blade side of the handguard, it has the small "4" stamped into the brass. The pommel cap of the sword has the smooth sides with the distinctive shape that is known to been manufactured by the famous Richmond, Virginia firm of Boyle and Gamble. The grip. On this particular example has the original wooden core intact with some of the original leather wrapping. The original single strand copper wire is still intact on the grip. The blade is full-length at 28-1/2 inches. It has the single groove going down the blade on each side. These swords came with a leather and brass scabbard when they left the factory. The scabbard has been lost to the ages as is so often the case. This is a very cool sword from a known Confederate manufactured that doesn't cost $10,000.
