ENGINNER ETCHED! Upon 1st glance, this is a very nice looking normal version of the Civil War staff & field officer sword & scabbard. But it is much more. This is the classic style that was carried by the higher ranking officers of the Civil War with a very cool difference. The blade has the original etching on the blade that displays well even after all of the years. It has vividly clear etching as you can see. The front side of the blade has the patriotic Union eagle in a spread wing stance with the Union shield and flags. On the back of the blade it has more patriotic and floral designs and the stylish "US" lettering. The etching still shows up nicely and displays well. What makes it extra special is the etching near the base on the back of the blade. It has the etched scene that shows the engineers using the transit. I have had hundreds of etched blade officers swords but this is the first one that i have encountered with an etched Engineer connection. The soldiers could, if they had enough money, get their swords custom etched. This soldier must have had such funds. At the base of the back side of the blade it has the desirable New York City retailer's marking from the firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. On the handle of the sword it has the original rayskin grip intact. On top of the wrap it has the original double twist style brass wire intact. The brass hand guard and pommel cap are present with a great untouched look all over. They have a pleasing color to the brass with the original gold gilding in the protected areas. The basket has the floral pattern with the "US" in the center which lets us know that it was for the staff and field rank of service. The scabbard is in attractive shape all over. It is also made of a metal body with brass furniture. It has the original mounts, rings, throat and drag intact. The mounts and drag of the sword are the fine quality ones that have the extra embellishment. You can see that the tip of the sword has poked out of the drag for eons. This is a great looking Civil War staff and field officer's sword in scabbard from the Schuyler, Hartley & Graham firm with the Engineer etching on the blade.
