WOW! Colonel Elmer Ellsworth's New York State Militia Tactics Manual
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is one of the coolest pieces that we have been able to offer in quite a while. This is an original New York State Militia tactics manual. What makes it extra special is that it was given to one of the most famous of all Civil War solders, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth. When the Civil War broke out, there was a huge Confederate flag that flew over the Marshall House Inn that was located in Alexandria, Virginia. What is special about that is that on May 24th 1861, a young Union Colonel, Elmer Ellsworth, decided that he would take down that flag. The flag was visible from the White House and was a very visible signal of the desire for rebellion. President Abraham Lincoln sent Ellsworth to take down the flag. After he took the flag down he was headed down the stairs, the owner of the house, James W. Jackson, who was a strong supporter of secession shot Ellsworth in the chest with a shotgun. Ellsworth died from the blast. He was friends with President Lincoln so his body laid in state at the White House in the East Room. He is regarded as the First Union officer to die during the Civil War. His name and legend became a rally point for the Union cause. The flag was described as a "Very Large Flag" some of the flag and pieces from the house itself were taken as souvenirs by people who realized the importance of the death of Ellsworth. This book is the 1858 "General Regulations for the Military Forces of the State of New York" and was printed by Weed, Parson & Company in Albany. The book measures 7-5/8ths inches by 5 inches in overall size. All of the pages appear to be present with a few being separated. On the inside of the book,. it has the beautiful ink inscription that reads Major E.E. Ellsworth with the Regards of Fred. Townsend Adjt. Genl. N.Y.S.M.". Frederick Townsend was the Adjutant for the New York State Militia. Another thing that is interesting about the book, is that on the inside of the back cover, it has a piece of wallpaper glued into the book. I haven't found an exact match coming from the Marshall House but it is likely that this is a souvenir piece from the site of Ellsworth's death. The book is accompanied by a Xerox copy of Ellsworth in his uniform. It isn't often that you get a chance to own a piece that was owned by a Union martyr. Don't miss your chance.
