Imported Style Brass Handguard Civil War Staff & Field Officer Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat original Civil War staff & field officer's sword. This is the classic style that was worn by high ranking officers of the Civil War. These swords are easily distinguished from the foot officer's swords because of the "US" lettering in the basket of the hand guard. This one has a dark attic tone patina color to the brass parts. The blade is full-length at 31-3/4th inches. The blade has a deep dark patina all over. At the base of the blade, it has the pair of stamp marks from the French Arsenal as well. During the Civil War, France made many fine swords for the Union soldiers. As you can see with this sword they made a quality piece for the well-to-do Union officer's to use. On the handle of the sword it has about 40% the original grip intact. This is the high quality version that has the sharkskin grip instead of leather. The skin has a rich gray color from age as you can see. It still has the original double twist brass wire. The sword is missing the scabbard as is so often the case because they were most often made of leather and brass and metal. The leather beaks on the scabbard and then they are discarded. This is a very nice looking well worn Civil War staff & Field officer sword.
