Original Ames Mfg. Company 1861 Dated Mounted Artillery Saber
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful original 1864 dated Civil War mounted artillery saber and scabbard. This one has a full-length blade with the maker marks at the base. It has the remnants of the straight line style maker's mark of "AMES MFg. CHICOPEE MASS." on the base of the back of the blade. Ames was the premiere maker of these artillery sabers during the Civil War. The front of the blade has the " US" mark as well as the inspector initials of "J.T..". This is the initials of the man who inspected swords for the U.S. Government, John Taylor. You can also see the bottom half of the stamped "1861" Production date. John Taylor only inspected these 1840 artillery sabers in 1860 and 1861 so we know it isn't an 1864 production date. The original guard and pommel cap are present and have a nice color to the brass. The edge of the pommel cap has the "JH" inspector initials still visible. On the handle it has the original leather grip and double twisted brass wire intact and it displays well as you can see. The sword is accompanied by a nice original metal scabbard with both mounts intact as well as the throat at the top. This is a fine looking Civil War artillery saber with scabbard and it has a nice early Civil War production date.
