This is a great looking bayonet. It is the .69 caliber bayonet that was designed to go on the Springfield or contract maker muskets of the model 1816 pattern. There were many of these bayonet used by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War since it is what many of the arsenals had on hand when the war broke out. This one is 17 inches in overall size with the full-length 14 inch blade with a cleaned silver tone tone all over. The bayonet has the deeply stamped "US" stampings on the base of the blade and is the style that has the inspector initial below. It has the matching letters and numbers on the side of the socket that would have matched the gun originally. These markings are because they were hand fitted to the gun and is why they very rarely are easily interchangeable. The socket is in fine shape and is nice enough to be put back onto a gun today.
