Amazing Artifact! Interesting Stone carved by soldiers! 57th Indiana & 141st New York
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is one of the most interesting artifacts that I have ever been able to offer. It is a soft stone, gray in color. As you can see, the stone has been carved by multiple soldiers with their name and regiment. I have seen some carving like this over the years but have never been able to offer them. This one has two names that we can make out for sure. The first one is the name of William H. Powers who served with the 57th Indiana Infantry. The records show that Powers enlisted in December of 1861 and served until he was killed at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee on November 30th 1864. The 2nd name is that of Samuel G. Moore who served with the 141st New York Infantry. He enlisted in August of 1862 and served until June of 1865 when he mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee. There is at least one more name on the stone but I can't make it out. It is accompanied by a printout of the soldiers' services. The stone itself measures approximately 10-1/2 inches by 4 inches by 3-1/2 inches in overall size. I got this artifact from the collection of Phil Ley in Ohio, where it had spent many years. Phil passed away several years ago and the exact history was lost with him. Phil had the piece displayed in an antique display case with a couple of trophy style plaques with the soldier's names on them at the top. It makes a fine display but I will have to ship the box separately to keep it from getting broken in transit. This is a cool looking artifact!
