Here is a very rare factory cased set! This is a great looking original Civil War .44 caliber Colt revolver. These guns are better known to collectors as the Civil War "Army" model revolver. They were a weapon of choice for most branches of the service during the War. This one has all matching serial numbers of 156,341 including the original barrel wedge. These serial numbers let us know that the gun was manufactured in 1866. Model 1860 Colt Army revolvers were made with an 8 inch barrel that has a silver blade style front sight. The original sight is intact on this gun. It still retains some of the factory bluing on the protected areas of the barrel. Across the top of the barrel is the Colt maker's mark along with the New York City location. These guns were actually manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut with the sales office being in New York City. What makes this one extra special is the marking that is found on the left hand side of the barrel near the frame. It is stamped with the British proofmarks. This marking along with the proofmarks on the cylinder and the "L" stampings below the serial numbers let us know that this gun was sold in the English market. In Wilson's book on Colt Firearms he states that only a few hundred were marked this way for English sale. These guns have the iron triggerguard compared to the standard brass ones. The action of the gun works functions on all positions. There is still about 30% of the original cylinder scene visible. On the side of the frame and also on the cylinder you can see the "COLTS PATENT" mark to go along with the same marking on the cylinder. On the handle of the gun the original 1-piece walnut grip is present with a nice look. This gun comes beautifully displayed in the original wooden factory casing. It is the fine quality case made of beautiful wood with the brass hardware. It has the shield design inlay on the top of the case. When you open the case you are greeted by the green case lining. We know it is the English casing because of the way that the gun tool has it's own place where it inserts and stands upright. It has the beautiful iron mold that retains the original bluing as well as a crisp "COLT'S PATENT" marking. There are three tins for percussion caps, an oiler and a fine original bag style powder flask. The one compartment even contains some of the original .44 caliber round ball bullets for the revolver. This is a fantastic cased set with everything that you could want. It is a keeper by anyone's standards.
