General George Meade's Coy of the History of the Pennsylvania Reserves Corps
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a fine copy of the History of the Pennsylvania Reserves Corps with a famous owner. This is a 1st edition printing of the book and on the inside cover, it has the ink inscription that reads "To Maj. Gen. Geo. G. Meade with compliments of The Author". This book was written by J.R. Sypher Esquire, Esq. and published by Elias Barr & Co. in 1865 at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This book was undoubtedly presented to General Meade in recognition of his role as Division Commander of the Pennsylvania Reserves early in the war. The importance of this volume is enhanced by the handwritten annotations & corrections made by General Meade regarding the Gettysburg Campaign. On the section about the Battle of Gettysburg, Meade made corrections, especially when it states that the enemy had the advantage. The book remains quite solid with some abrasions to the leather binding and slight losses at the corners. The pages have yellowed a bit with age, but the print is easily legible. Engravings are present and quite clear. This is a fine example of an interesting book belonging to one of the key figures of the American Civil War.
